Getting started with sound healing
To become a sound bath practitioner, start with a certified Level 1 sound healing foundation course with The Sound Healing Academy, then progress to a Level 2 Practitioner Diploma in Sound Baths. You’ll develop your instrument skills, learn how to plan and facilitate group sound baths, and receive guidance from experienced tutors. The Sound Healing Academy offers online and in-person training pathways.
No. Many courses are designed for beginners, so you can start without previous sound healing experience. If you're new to sound healing, a Level 1 foundation course is a good starting point. Choose a certified pathway if you want tutor support and to progress towards a practitioner diploma.
A sound healer may work with individuals or groups using sound healing instruments and techniques. A sound bath practitioner focuses on creating and facilitating immersive group sound experiences. The right training depends on whether you want to work with groups, individual clients, or both.
Yes. Sound healing training can complement yoga, meditation, breathwork, massage and other wellbeing practices. You can choose an instrument-specific course to add sound to your existing sessions, or follow a full practitioner pathway if you want to offer dedicated sound healing sessions or group sound baths.
Choosing the right course
Certified courses include tutor guidance, assessment and a qualification when you successfully complete the course requirements. They provide a pathway towards further practitioner training. Uncertified courses are designed for independent, self-paced learning and developing foundational skills without formal certification or the same level of tutor support.
Level 1 builds your foundation in sound healing techniques and instrument use. Certified Level 1 training is the usual prerequisite for Level 2. Level 2 develops your practical skills further and leads towards a Practitioner Diploma, with training focused on your chosen pathway, such as facilitating group sound baths or working with individual clients.
Look for a certified pathway that includes the Level 1 foundation training and a Level 2 Sound Bath Practitioner Diploma. This combines foundational instrument skills with more advanced training in planning and facilitating group sound baths. If you're already qualified, check the Level 2 entry requirements before booking.
Yes. SHA offers single-instrument courses covering options such as Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, drums and voice. These are useful if you want to explore a particular instrument or introduce sound into an existing practice. Choose a certified version if you need a qualification and tutor support.
A short or uncertified course helps you explore sound healing or develop particular instrument skills. A Practitioner Diploma is a more comprehensive training pathway with formal learning, assessment and tutor support. It's designed for people who want to work professionally within the scope of their qualification.
Certification, qualifications and professional practice
A Practitioner Diploma from The Sound Healing Academy is designed to prepare you to offer sound healing professionally within your training pathway. The group-focused diploma prepares you to facilitate sound baths and other group sessions, while the individual-client pathway focuses on one-to-one sound healing. SHA is an approved training provider with the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT), and eligible graduates can apply for professional indemnity insurance, subject to the insurer's terms.
SHA states that its Practitioner Diplomas can qualify graduates to apply for professional indemnity insurance through IICT. Insurance eligibility depends on the qualification completed, the work you intend to offer and the insurer's requirements. An uncertified course alone should not be assumed to qualify you for professional insurance.
SHA is an approved IICT training provider, and its Practitioner Diplomas may support applications for professional insurance in many countries. However, requirements vary by country, insurer and professional activity, so check the rules that apply where you intend to practise.
Course format, duration and what you'll learn
Both options are available. Online courses allow you to study at your own pace, while in-person workshops provide hands-on learning with a teacher and other students. Some workshop pathways also include online study and tutor support. Availability depends on the course you choose.
SHA lists a standard duration of around three months for Level 1 courses and 12 months for Level 2 courses. Some individual instrument courses and workshops are shorter, while completion time depends on the programme, assessment requirements and your pace of study. Check the specific course page before enrolling.
Requirements vary by course. Some courses can be started without owning every instrument, while practical training will require access to the instruments you need to practise with. Check the course equipment list before purchasing, and explore instrument bundles from our Sound Therapy Shop if you need to build your collection.
